Program Director - Summer Camp

Company: TrulyHired
Location: Barnstable
Posted on: January 16, 2022

Job Description:

The Young Mariner Program compliments the CCMM mission by actively fostering an appreciation for maritime culture in kids. Specifically, we provide a hands-on introduction to a wide array of maritime activities, including marine biology, navigation, maritime history, sailing, seamanship, and naval architecture. To do this, we integrate the Museum's exhibits, our Dyer 29 research vessel, ADVENTURE, our historic catboat, SARAH, and the "classroom" of Nantucket Sound to provide a fun, high content experience. Our hope is that no middle schooler will ever look at the water the same way after participating in Young Mariner. Program Scope:The Young Mariner Program summer camp participants attend four, half day sessions (either morning or afternoon). Each session consists of twelve (12) kids that spend half of their time on the water and half their time at the Museum. The program runs for nine (9) weeks from June 27, 2022, to August 22, 2022. This program may be expanded to five days. The Program has capacity for 24 kids per week or a total capacity of 216 kids. The Museum aspires to offer at least 50% of these slots on a tuition-free (scholarship) basis. Summer 2021 staff consisted of a Program Director who acted as the onboard educator, ADVENTURE boat captain, two shoreside assistant educators and a part time SARAH boat captain. We expect to determine the summer final levels in conjunction with input from the new Program Director. It is expected that the Program Director will spend the majority of class time as the onboard educator aboard ADVENTURE. Curriculum:An overview of the 2022 curriculum is below. This is subject to modification with input from the Program Director and Program stakeholders during the spring. ---40% Local Marine Biology - The basics of local water quality and an introduction to the fish, birds, and mollusks that they will see every day they are on it. In addition to onboard and shore side experiments and specimen collection, kids will visit a local oyster farm in Lewis Bay. ---20% Navigation - A basic, hands on, understanding of navigation (and its history) and the tools and rules that are used by people to get from here to there safely and ---efficiently. Kids will use traditional as well as modern navigation techniques to hunt for local spots of historical and geographic interest. ---20% Naval Architecture and Marine Physics - This section is designed to have kids understand the types of boats that they see on the water and the basic physic underpinning their operation. This includes an understanding of how a sail works (lift) and how a boat floats (buoyancy) and why hull shape makes boats go fast (plane). ---20% Sailing and boat building history- Kids will visit the Cook Boat Shop and spend a few hours on SARAH, a traditional Cape Cod Catboat experiencing hands-on boat handling. Our goal is to continually upgrade the rigor and content of each of these sessions. A perfect day is one where kids are moving fast and seeing as many new things as possible. While seamanship is not taught as a separate section, kids are encouraged to help with the lines, bumpers, try steering by the compass and all the other teaching moments that a skilled and energetic educator can conjure up while onboard. Specific responsibilities:The Program Director will have day to day responsibility of running the summer camp and is expected to act as the face of the summer camp, including (some) marketing, budget oversight, daily execution of camp, daily safety of camp and participants, and quality of product delivered. Staff support is currently envisioned to include a licensed captain, and an assistant teacher and counselor. Our highest priority is the safety and education of participants and ensuring they have an excellent experience on the water and ashore. An approximation of the time commitment is below. ---February - April - 4-5 hours per week (13 weeks) (65 hours) oGet to know the program and commit time to understand its history and aspirations. oProvide input on and finalize the curriculum and the development of the specific summer 2022 schedule and required materials.oDevelop job descriptions for staffing based on above and lead in interviewing and hiring. oReview existing marketing strategy and participate in marketing start up and some initial meetings with participating schools and other local organizations.oReview allotted budget and create and manage the working program budget.oReview state and local summer camp guidelines and schedule necessary site inspections.oReview and advise changes to website, reservation/camp sign-up system---May - Mid June 6-10 hours per week (8 weeks) (80 hours) oHost and lead all site inspections for state and local requirements.oAssist in marketing, particularly personal visits to schools, yacht clubs and other organizations.oManage Camp budget and report to ED and Program stakeholders periodically.oPurchase materials for summer camp as needed for curriculum or participants (clothing, crafts, etc.).oComplete hiring and other logistics preparation (orientation and training of staff, curriculum finalization).oKeep camp records and documentation processes in line with MA State summer camp guidelines.---July - August - 35 hours per week, full time - (9 weeks) (315 hours) oFull responsibility for Program operations including overseeing program staff, participant drop off, check-in, on water teaching, safety, trouble shooting, safety, and pick-up, check-out processes.oIt is envisioned that the PD will be required to be available for 2-3 Saturdays during the summer for off-site program promotion.
